Whole House Water Filtration System

Whole House Water Filtration Systems

A whole house filtration system is a complete package for treating water entering the home.  The system typically is made up of several different pieces of water treatment devices each addressing a specific water quality issue.

The diagram to the right depicts a basic system which has a sediment filter typically in the 5 micron range to filter out any large sediment in the water supply followed by a carbon filter which will remove/reduce the chlorine and certain chemicals from the water.  Both are placed in front of the water softener in order to prolong the life of the resin bed which does the softening of the water.  Next up is the water softener which will help get rid of all those hardness ions found in the water making the water soft followed by an Ultra-Violet light which will help ensure that the water entering the house is bacteriologically safe.

The normal installation of the whole house water filtration systems is connected to the main water line entering the house so that all of the water is treated before the water is dispensed in your house – faucets, toilets, showers, baths, kitchen, laundry.   Normally the faucet with the shut off to the house is left untreated so that a source of water for watering the grass or plants is available.

Installation of a whole house water filter system is best placed inside out of the weather, typical installation are found in the garage.  A home owner that is in the planning stages can request a "water softener loop" be installed in the garage which will greatly reduce the cost of installation and at the same time considerations can be made for the outside faucets.
